alkyl

Any organic radical of the formula CnH2n + 1; the chief members are methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl. These radicals are not stable in the free state but are found combined in a large number of types of organic compounds such as alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and halides.
