allene

Any of a class of dienes (hydrocarbons with two double bonds) with adjacent double bonds. The simplest example is CH2=C=CH2, allene itself. Because of the stereochemistry of the double bonds, the terminal hydrogen atoms lie in planes mutually at right angles. Allenes behave mainly as typical unsaturated compounds, but are less stable than dienes with nonadjacent double bonds.
