allopathy

In homeopathy, a term used for orthodox medicine, using therapies designed to counteract the manifestations of the disease. In strict usage, allopathy is the opposite of homeopathy.

The term was invented by Samuel Hahnemann to describe the treatment of disease using medicines whose action upon the body in health produces manifestations different from those of the disease being treated. Homeopathy, on the other hand, uses remedies which produce manifestations similar to those of the disease being treated.
