alopecia
| Form of baldness. Alopecia areata, patches of baldness appearing in an otherwise normal growth of hair, often attacks young people and tends to be recurrent. It is usually limited to the scalp and beard. |
| The cause of alopecia areata is not known, but it is not due to any serious constitutional disorder. Nervous tension may play a part. The hair usually grows again in time, but sometimes in a different colour, normally white. |
| Alopecia universalis, where all body hair, including eyelashes, is absent is genetic in origin and the gene involved was mapped in 1997. |
