alphorn
| Wind instrument consisting of a straight, usually wooden tube terminating in a conical endpiece with an upturned bell, sometimes up to 4 m/12 ft in length. It is used to summon cattle and serenade tourists in the highlands of central Europe. |
| The wood is split lengthways and hollowed out, then reunited and covered with bark or split cane to seal against leakage. In some areas the alphorn is made of metal. |
