carotene

Naturally occurring pigment of the carotenoid group. Carotenes produce the orange, yellow, and red colours of carrots, tomatoes, oranges, and crustaceans.

Alpha carotene, beta carotene, and other carotenoids are believed by many researchers to aid in reducing the risk of lung cancer, although there is some evidence that beta carotene may be linked to a higher rate of lung cancer and mortality in smokers, former smokers, and those subjected to exposure to asbestos in their working environments.
While doing this, I discovered that fruits and vegetables are loaded with phytonutrients (like beta & alpha carotene, lycopene and lutein) which, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (from their website):
