hypothesis

In science, an idea concerning an event and its possible explanation. The term is one favoured by the followers of the philosopher Karl Popper, who argue that the merit of a scientific hypothesis lies in its ability to make testable predictions.

An unproven idea. It is part of the process of solving problems: to form a hypothesis and then test it by experiment.

How about considering an alternative hypothesis, along Giroux's lines?
The power of a statistical test is the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis given that the alternative hypothesis is true (Cohen, 1988; Kraemer & Thiemann, 1987; Lipsey, 1990).
In this situation, the null hypothesis is that the tumor incidence rates in the dose groups are no larger than the rate in the control group; the alternative hypothesis is that the tumor incidence rate in at least one dose group is strictly larger than in the control group.
