altimetry

Process of measuring altitude, or elevation. Aircraft commonly use radar altimeters, which measure the height of the aircraft by measuring the time taken for a radar pulse to travel from the aircraft to the ground and back. Older aircraft altimeters measured air pressure to determine height. Satellite altimetry involves using an instrument – commonly a laser – to measure the distance between the satellite and the ground.
