altiplano

A group of domestic llamas in the Altiplano in Peru. Male llamas are used as pack animals throughout the Andes and females are raised for their milk and meat. The wool of both sexes is used for making textiles and the dried dung is burnt as fuel.

Snowy volcanoes dominate the Lauca National Park, in the altiplano of northern Chile. This desert plateau, part of the Andes, is grazed by vicunas, animals of the camel family that were once hunted for their wool, but are now protected.

Sparsely populated upland plateau of the Andes of South America, stretching from southern Peru and southwest Bolivia to northwestern Argentina. It lies between the eastern and western cordilleras (ranges) of the Andes, and has an elevation of 3,000–4,000 m/10,000–13,000 ft.
