alkalosis

In medicine, condition characterized by an increase in the alkalinity of the blood or, more accurately, by a decrease in hydrogen ions in the blood. Alkalosis is due to an excessive loss of hydrogen ions due to vomiting. It can also be due to excessive retention of bicarbonate ions by the kidney or to the ingestion of large amounts of alkalis, such as antacids. The treatment of alkalosis is dependent upon removing the circumstances that lead to the disturbance in the acid-base balance of the body.
