Now she is one of a group of scientists who board
submersibles like Alvin to study Earth's seafloor. It was this vision that inspired the next generation of black
choreographers, particularly Talley Beatty, a student and a member of
her company, and the younger Alvin Ailey, who, as Jennifer Dunning has
written, was bewitched by her when as a teenager he first saw one of her
