amendment

A change or addition to a legislative bill, law, or constitution. The most well known amendments are to the US Constitution; the first ten of these comprise the Bill of Rights.

Amendments are often added to bills before legislatures vote on them to become law. They can also be added to existing laws or constitutions. Proposed amendments usually go through a standard procedure before they are incorporated into legislation.

In the US Constitution, Article V provides for amendments. For an amendment to pass, two-thirds of the members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives must approve it, and three-fourths of the states must ratify it. In 2002, the US Constitution had a total of 27 amendments.
