ammoniaColourless pungent-smelling gas, lighter than air and very soluble in water. It is made on an industrial scale by the Haber (or Haber–Bosch) process, and used mainly to produce nitrogenous fertilizers, nitric acid, and some explosives. In aquatic organisms and some insects, nitrogenous waste (from the breakdown of amino acids) is excreted in the form of ammonia, rather than as urea in mammals. How to thank TFD for its existence?
