Opera by Italo Montemezzi (libretto by S Benelli, from his play of the same title), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 10 April 1913. In the story the king strangles his daughter-in-law and spreads poison on her lips; her lover and husband also die after kissing her.
