In her study of the two novella collections, Novelas
amorosas y ejemplares and Desenganos amorosos, Margaret Greer states
that Zayas is an "aristocratic, protofeminist writer, torn between
gender and class identity" (61). Her two collections of novellas, Novelas amorosas y
ejemplares (1637) and Desenganos amorosos (1647), were translated,
plagiarized, and reissued into the nineteenth century, when they fell
into near oblivion. The Novelas ejemplares y
amorosas and the Desenganos amorosos are fascinating from the
perspective of structure, language, and ideology, all of which are
marked, logically, by gender inflection. |
