Amorphophallus

Genus of the Araceae (Arum lily) family found in the East Indies. The rhizome produces a single enormous leaf annually (up to 3 m/10 ft long) and a very large spadix (flower cluster), bearing both male and female flowers. In the species Amorphophallus titanum the spadix is sometimes 3 m/10 ft tall.

The freakish-looking Amorphophallus titanum, known to Indonesians as the ``corpse flower,'' was beginning to bloom, said library spokeswoman Susan Turner-Lowe.
First discovered by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari in Sumatra in 1878, the Titan Arum, or Amorphophallus titanum, is a member of the Family Araceae, the Aroids or Arum plants.
The Amorphophallus titanum, known to Indonesians as the ``corpse flower,'' exudes an odor that some say is like garbage or rotting flesh.
