amplitudeIn physics, maximum variation of an oscillation from the equilibrium value. In a transverse wave motion, such as an ocean wave, it is the height of a crest (or the depth of a trough). In an electromagnetic wave (which is also transverse), it is the maximum intensity of the electric or magnetic field. For a longitudinal wave, such as a sound wave, amplitude is the maximum distance a particle moves from its resting position. A quiet sound has a lower amplitude and a loud sound has a higher amplitude. For a louder sound, more sound energy enters the ear every second. Amplitude is generally denoted by a. AM (amplitude modulation) radio broadcasting is a method of transmitting audio-frequency signals. The amplitude of the low-frequency audio signal is made to modulate (vary slightly) the amplitude of a continuously transmitted radio carrier wave of a higher frequency. In this way the modulating signal is imprinted on the carrier wave. amplitude

Then she put upon her the white frock that Tess had worn at the club-walking, the airy fulness of which, supplementing her enlarged COIFFURE, imparted to her developing figure an amplitude which belied her age, and might cause her to be estimated as a woman when she was not much more than a child. To conclude: no man can by care taking (as the Scripture saith) add a cubit to his stature, in this little model of a man's body; but in the great frame of kingdoms and commonwealths, it is in the power of princes or estates, to add amplitude and greatness to their kingdoms; for by introducing such ordinances, constitutions, and customs, as we have now touched, they may sow greatness to their posterity and succession. And this cruel outward accuser was there in the shape of a wife--nay, of a young bride, who, instead of observing his abundant pen-scratches and amplitude of paper with the uncritical awe of an elegant-minded canary-bird, seemed to present herself as a spy watching everything with a malign power of inference. |
