ankle

Hinge joint connecting the lower leg and the foot. It is formed by the ankle bone (talus) that fits into a socket provided by the lower ends of the tibia and fibula.

The ankle has two components: the regular ankle joint that moves up and down, and the subtalar (ST) joint beneath it that moves in and out.
Similar to the knee joint, where effusion appears to cause inhibition of the quadriceps femoris muscle group, decreased H-reflex excitability of muscles around the ankle joint has been reported in the presence of ankle effusion.
