antherozoid

Motile (or independently moving) male gamete produced by algae, bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), pteridophytes (ferns, club mosses, and horsetails), and some gymnosperms (notably the cycads). Antherozoids are formed in an antheridium and, after being released, swim by means of one or more flagella, to the female gametes. Higher plants have nonmotile male gametes contained within pollen grains.
