antimonySilver-white, brittle, semimetallic element (a metalloid), atomic number 51, relative atomic mass 121.75. Its chemical symbol comes from Latin stibium. It occurs chiefly as the ore stibnite, and is used to make alloys harder; it is also used in photosensitive substances in colour photography, optical electronics, fireproofing, pigments, and medicine. It was employed by the ancient Egyptians in a mixture to protect the eyes from flies. |
