Antique

Narrow province along the west coast of Panay Island in the Philippines; area 2,523 sq km/974 sq mi; population (1995) 432,000. The capital is San José de Buenavista (known locally as San José Antique; population 96,860; 1995). It is fringed to the east by the Cordilleras mountains. Agriculture is carried out in irrigated rice fields along the coast. Fishing and aquaculture are being developed.
