antivirus software

Computer software that detects viruses and/or cleans viruses from an infected computer system. Antivirus programs can be designed to catch all viruses entering a system, or to catch only those viruses delivered by a particular method, such as e-mail. In order for the software to remain effective it must be updated regularly with new signature files to enable the software to recognize the latest viruses; this can usually be done over the Internet.
