ant lion![]() There are about 1,000 species of ant lion; all larvae, and many adults, are carnivorous, feeding on insects and spiders. Eggs are laid singly in sand or dry soil. Larvae of the genus Myrmeleon live in funnel-shaped sandy pits, with their strong, toothed jaws ready to trap any insect that stumbles in. Larva of one of the insects of the family Myrmeleontidae, order Neuroptera, which traps ants by waiting at the bottom of a pit dug in loose, sandy soil. Ant lions are mainly tropical, but also occur in parts of Europe, where there are more than 40 species, and in the USA, where they are called doodlebugs. How to thank TFD for its existence?
