applicationIn computing, program or job designed for the benefit of the end user. Examples of general-purpose application programs include word processors, desktop publishing programs, databases, spreadsheet packages, and graphics programs (see CAD and CAM). Application-specific programs include payroll and stock control systems. Applications may also be custom designed to solve a specific problem, not catered for in other types of application. The term is used to distinguish such programs from those that control the computer (systems programs) or assist the programmer, such as a compiler. application

The Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, in noting that relatively low cost micro- and small satellites could make significant space capabilities accessible to a wide range of users, including students, engineers and scientists in many countries, recommended that the UN Space Applications Programme should devote more attention to those issues. Photonics Europe includes an industry applications programme with experts in business development, commercialization of technology and best-practices for industry. It had resulted in strengthening and reorientation of the UN Space Applications Programme to promote indigenous capabilities in those countries, as well as in creating, under the auspices of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, an international space information service. |
