appropriation account| An account that shows how the net profit of a business has been distributed. Net profit is generally distributed in three ways. Part is paid to the government as corporation tax. Part is distributed to shareholders as dividends. Lastly, part is kept back by the business to finance investment; this part is called retained profit. |
