The apricot is now widely cultivated in warm but usually nontropical parts of the world. It thrives best where the climate is reasonably dry and sunny, such as in western Argentina, where there are extensive plantations.

Yellow-fleshed fruit of the apricot tree, which is closely related to the almond, peach, plum, and cherry. Although native to the Far East, it has long been cultivated in Armenia, from where it was introduced into Europe and the USA. (Genus Prunus armeniaca, family Rosaceae.)

Her bucolic Spazier Avenue home was originally surrounded by orchards of peach and apricot trees and grapevines, ``like a nice little pretty mountain village,'' she said last week from the home near the Burbank border.
