aqua vitae

The elixir of life of the alchemists who discovered distillation. They identified it with the distilled quintessence of wine, but in French eau-de-vie applies to spirits distilled from other substances than wine. In Gaelic its equivalent uisge beatha provides the derivation of whisky.
