araucaria

Coniferous tree related to the firs, with flat, scalelike needles. Once widespread, it is now native only to the southern hemisphere. Some grow to gigantic size. Araucarias include the monkey-puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), the Australian bunya bunya pine (A. bidwillii), and the Norfolk Island pine (A. heterophylla). (Genus Araucaria, family Araucariaceae.)
