archive

Collection of historically valuable records, ranging from papers and documents to photographs, films, videotapes, and sound recordings.

The National Archives Hall in Washington, DC, contains the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. The National Archives and Records Service is responsible for preserving federal records and for administration of the presidential libraries, usually established in the incumbent's birthplace.

The UN and several international organizations maintain archives. The International Council on Archives was founded 1948 in Paris under the auspices of UNESCO.

archive

Collection of computer files. The term is commonly used to refer to the files created by data compression programs, such as the popular PKZIP, which contain one or more files. It is also used to refer to a large store of files selected for preservation.
