argol

Crude product deposited on the bottom of a cask during alcoholic fermentation. It is used for the preparation of ‘cream of tartar’ and tartaric acid.

The argol is partially purified by recrystallization from hot water, then dissolved in water, and boiled with chalk, when calcium tartrate, CaC4H4O6, is precipitated. After washing, the tartrate is treated with sulphuric acid, which sets free the tartaric acid.

Argol is also a Mongolian term for dried dung used as a fuel.
