arioso

In music, a type of recitative (sung narration), of more lyrical than speechlike quality. Some composers use the arioso to initiate or conclude a recitative, such as Bach in his cantata Ein feste Burg/A Safe Stronghold (1724). It can also refer to a section or passage in an instrumental work, which imitates recitative, as in Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 31 (1821).
