arithmetic mean

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Legal, Financial, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.09 sec.

arithmetic mean

Average of a set of n numbers, obtained by adding the numbers and dividing by n. For example, the arithmetic mean of the set of 5 numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12 is (1 + 3 + 6 + 8 + 12) ÷ 5 = 30 ÷ 5 = 6.

The term average is often used to refer only to the arithmetic mean, even though the mean is in fact only one form of average (the others include median and mode). In addition it is useful to know the range or spread of the data.

Data in groups

In grouped data, the mean can only be estimated. For example, in a school survey the number of sets of homework per week can be shown in the table:

The estimated mean = 248/50 or 4.96 sets of homework per week.
