arithmetic mean |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Legal, Financial, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.01 sec. |
arithmetic meanAverage of a set of n numbers, obtained by adding the numbers and dividing by n. For example, the arithmetic mean of the set of 5 numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12 is (1 + 3 + 6 + 8 + 12) ÷ 5 = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. The term average is often used to refer only to the arithmetic mean, even though the mean is in fact only one form of average (the others include median and mode). In addition it is useful to know the range or spread of the data.
