hydrocarbon

Any of a class of chemical compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon (for example, the alkanes and alkenes). Hydrocarbons are obtained industrially principally from petroleum and coal tar.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons contain at least one double or triple carbon–carbon bond, whereas saturated hydrocarbons contain only single bonds.

Chemical energy is stored in hydrocarbons, substances made up of carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons obtain their energy from the sun when plants use sunlight during photosynthesis to produce glucose (food). Fossil fuels, such as petroleum and gas, contain the hydrocarbons of dead plants that have been fossilized over millions of years.

The research on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in smokeless tobacco adds to existing evidence that smokeless contains two-dozen other carcinogens that cause oral and pancreatic cancers.
The five-year study which followed the development of 249 children living in the densely populated areas of Harlem and the Bronx in New York showed that exposure to environmental pollutants known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) had an adverse affect on intelligence quotient.
Some examples are blood lead for lead exposure, carboxy haemoglobin for exposure to CO, and 1-Hydroxy pyrene for exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) to predict the health effects associated with exposure to these substances.
