| Lau hypothesizes that ingestion of the well-established neurotoxicants aspartic acid and L-glutamic acid as additives could lead to a high enough body burden to kill neurons by a mechanism called excitotoxicity. The nucleotide changes at positions 1397, 1407, and 1481 resulted in amino acid substitutions (with 94% identity to Malaysia, 56 of 59) from isoleucine to valine, glycine to glutamic acid, and asparagine to aspartic acid at codons 429, 432, and 457 of N protein, respectively. A synthetic derivative of a combination of aspartic acid and phenylalanine, the same two amino acids that are used to make aspartame. |
