Findings on fine-needle aspiration biopsy were consistent with a benign cyst. Barbara Florentine, director of pathology and laboratory services at Newhall Memorial and the head of the hospital's aspiration biopsy clinic, reviewed the slides of cells taken from the mass and concluded that Weichel had papillary thyroid cancer, a slow-growing cancer that is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Diagnosis of mycobacterial infection is performed by using mycobacterial differential skin tests and fine needle aspiration biopsy. |
