protectorateFormerly in international law, a small state under the direct or indirect control of a larger one. The 20th-century equivalent was a trust territory. In English history the rule of Oliver and Richard Cromwell 1653–59 is referred to as the Protectorate.

We examined specific "voter guides" put out in the past by some of FOF's associated state groups. Associated state arrangements constitutionally link former colonies to a larger state, usually the former metropolis, but give the former the right unilaterally to opt for independence if it follows certain procedures. Mexico borderlands, which despite a very substantial porosity are transversed by an arbitrary political border, Puerto Rican island and mainland identity and cultural discourse offer a different origin of complexity by virtue of the political situation of the island as free associated state, an expression in which only the middle term corresponds in any substantial way to actual circumstance. |
