Starlike punctuation mark () used to link the asterisked word with a footnote at the bottom of a page, and in place of certain letters in a word (usually a taboo word).

The accent marked by an asterisk resembles the lower half of a circle.

I believe it was rather full of sighs, and shrugs and starts, expressed in dashes, and asterisks, and exclamations, but I am sure that the feeling was the genuine and manly sort which is of all times and always the latest wear.
