Tube leading from the outer ear opening to the eardrum. It is found only in animals whose eardrums are located inside the skull, principally mammals and birds.

Examination revealed that a piece of plastic that fits snugly in the earpiece of the hearing aid had become wedged between the anterior external auditory canal wall and the tympanic membrane annulus (figure).
