aulos

Ancient Greek double-reed musical instrument, the equivalent of the Latin tibia and akin to the modern oboe.

The double aulos often seen in paintings and sculpture would have enabled the melody to be accompanied by a drone, both sets of reeds being blown simultaneously by one player.

The myth recalls that Athena had invented the aulos, but the other deities had mocked how her cheeks bulged out when she played, thus she threw the musical instrument away, cursing whoever should pick it up.
Despite his same-sex second birth, Dionysus was closely associated with women in myth and ritual, believed to have been raised by nymphs and always accompanied by the maenads, a group of frenzied female celebrants often depicted dancing wildly to the accompaniment of the aulos and tambourine.
He also has performed with the Aspen Festival and Chamber Orchestra, the Naumburg Award-winning Aulos Wind Quintet and, as principal clarinetist, with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the Las Vegas Symphony and the Reno Philharmonic.
