Researchers had hoped that the australopithecine fossil would shed light on the transition to an upright stance and tool use between 4, million and 3 million years ago.
It's the first time we have a virtually complete skeleton of an australopithecine, or ape-man.
This is reflected in the earliest of hominid societies, the australopithecines, from at least three-and-a-half million years ago.
