autos sacramentales

Spanish drama form, related to the mystery plays in England, and well established by the 13th century. These traditional performances were redeveloped in the 17th century by dramatists Lope de Vega and Calderón, whose masterpiece in this form is El gran teatro del mundo/The Great Theatre of the World (1641).
