Absalon (1128–1201)

Danish statesman. He became Archbishop of Lund 1178 and minister to Waldemar I and Canute VI of Denmark. He took an active part in helping with the legislation of Waldemar I, and drove the Wendish pirates from the country. Under Canute VI he led the expedition 1184 that captured Pomerania and Mecklenburg and overthrew Boguslaw I, King of Poland.

He was a fine statesman and general, and a lover of art and learning, assisting Saxo Grammaticus with his great history of Denmark. He built a castle which was the nucleus of the city of Copenhagen.
