flagellum| (Plural flagella) small hairlike organ on the surface of certain cells. Flagella are the motile organs of certain protozoa and single-celled algae, and of the sperm cells of higher animals. Unlike cilia, flagella usually occur singly or in pairs; they are also longer and have a more complex whiplike action. |
