banjo

Resonant stringed musical instrument with a long fretted neck and circular drum-type soundbox covered on the topside only by stretched skin (now usually plastic). It is played with a plectrum. Modern banjos normally have five strings.

The banjo originated in the American South among black slaves (based on a similar instrument of African origin).
