Banning

City in southwestern California, 43 km/27 mi southeast of Riverside; population (1990) 20,500. Founded in the 1880s, it has been a resort for sufferers from asthma and arthritis. There is some light industry and a developing residential community.

Banning is situated in the San Gorgonio Pass between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains. The Morongo Indian Reservation lies to the northeast of the city.
