Bar-le-Duc

French town, capital of the département of Meuse, on the River Ornain, and on the Marne–Rhine canal; population (1999) 16,900. The chief industries are the manufacture of hosiery and metal goods. Once capital of the duchy of Bar, the town has many old churches and mansions and the remains of the ducal palace.

James Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender to the British throne, lived in Bar-le-Duc for some years.
