| One explanation for this paradox may be that an acute baroreceptor reflex is occurring in response to an increased cardiac afterload. As a chemoreceptor, it is distinct from the carotid sinus, which is a baroreceptor. Patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease were described as elderly patients, those with increased sensitivity of baroreceptors, and those with carotid artery plaques or a history of hypotension or hypertension. |
