Barre

City in central Vermont, about 13 km/8 mi southeast of Montpelier; population (1990) 9,500. It is on the Stevens and other Winooski River branches. East Barre, Websterville, and Graniteville are part of the surrounding Barre township (population (1990) 7,400). It is a centre for granite quarrying.

Barre became the leading granite centre in the USA after the War of 1812. Through the 19th century its quarries attracted a European and French-Canadian work force, making the city unusual in Vermont for its diversity. Other industries include dairy farming and the manufacturing of tools, machines, and wood products.
