East of the islands, one of the largest barrier reefs in the world parallels the entire 175-mile-long country.
Barrier reefs are separated from land by wide deep lagoons.
Just below South Water Cay -- a dinghy ride away -- is Carrie Bow Cay, used by the Smithsonian Institution and Cambridge University to survey Belize's barrier reefs and its offshore atolls.
