Factor that makes it difficult or impossible for a company to enter an industry and compete with existing producers. Barriers to entry to an industry are high when, for example, it is very costly to buy the physical capital needed to set up in that industry, or when there are very strong brands in the market, or when the law grants privileges such as patent rights to existing firms.
